Polarizing filter

Polarization of light is achieved by means of a polarizing filter. Polarizing filters only let light that is in the polarization plane of the filter pass through, and suppress light rays that oscillate in the "incorrect" plane. As a result, the light that exits the polarizing filter is always polarized.

If light is regarded as a wave, then the polarization of a wave means the direction of the electric field's amplitude; it defines the light's oscillation state. A distinction can be made between linearly polarized, circularly polarized and elliptically polarized waves, although in machine vision, polarization refers to linearly polarized light in most cases.

In image acquisition, polarizing filters are used to avoid reflections and heighten colors and contrast, among other things.

When using polarizing filters, longer exposure times can sometimes result due to the reduced amount of light.
